Before going back out again, my mom took me to a nice dinner since I had been so busy that I hadn’t eaten much more than a bag of peanuts since breakfast the previous day. Having family close to an event like this kinda ruled. At dinner, I decided it would be a good idea to consume two Irish coffees to ward off the cold- and turns out, it was the best damn idea I’ve had in a while.

SXSW 2010

Street Sweeper Social Club played six shows over the course of SXSW, and I had hoped to catch them again….and I made it to their final one. First I listened to a singer songwriter, Diane Birch, which was an odd opener for SSSC. She is apparently a preacher’s daughter, and introduced one song as something she wrote about hiding her goth makeup from him in high school. I sympathized, though if I had written a song with that theme, it wouldn’t have sounded so sweet…

Between sets, this guy came out and threw out a bunch of Ron English limited edition Slash posters- and I didn’t go for any of them- that’s how cold I was. I’m a friggin poster collector, but my hands were not coming out of my pockets for anything…..except……

It was interesting when SSSC came out on stage, they had to waste a bit of time because they were waiting for the live broadcast to get started. So Boots did an a cappella Coup track, Underdogs. It was awesome.

They got word to go after a few more uncomfortable moments. They started with their new track, Ghetto Blaster, and since I got quite a few questions about it after the other show I saw, I got it on film for you guys, though it’s not my best work.

They played the same set as the other day, but I realized that I’d never watched SSSC from this angle- Carl Restivo’s side. So while I danced about to all my familiar favorites, I was able to watch him play more than before. I’m glad he’s still in the band- I had thought that maybe he wouldn’t be a part of it anymore since he recently toured with Rihanna.

It’s always cool to listen to the people around me get totally won over by these guys. They get so into it, several people tapped me on the shoulder and were like, ‘did you see…? did you hear….?”, and I’m like, yesssss, I know, this is like my eighth time seeing them 🙂
