I’m the eternal third wheel to my friend and her boyfriend these days.
After an adventurous meal at an Oaxacan restaurant where I was the only gringa in the place, we strolled up to The Wiltern for an evening with The Kills.
I like The Kills…but I’m really there because I girlcrush on Alison Mosshart. I prefer her in The Dead Weather…but this will do. She’s one of a handful of females who make me wish I’d never given up playing the guitar and singing back in highschool, when I discovered that I somehow served a better purpose watching others play.
The Wiltern was packed and we arrived as Eleanor Friedberg played. This music was not my thing, so I let my mind wander. I started thinking about the last time I saw The Kills, when I really went for The Horrors and was dead tired because it was smack in the middle of following Nine Inch Nail’s and Jane’s Addiction all over the West Coast. And that made me think about Nine Inch Nails…and suddenly…a weird coincidence slapped me in the face.
Today is September 10th, 2011 and I’m at The Wiltern.
2 years ago to the day I was seeing Nine Inch Nails play ‘their last show ever’ at The Wiltern.
WHOA! The strange coincidence sent shivers down my spine. So much has changed since then….almost everything.
As The Kills took the stage, everyone seemed to settle into a subdued dance to their brand of sex punk. Mosshart’s hair is now burgundy-topped. She never quite stops moving…never goes out of character. The other half, Jamie Hince, plays second fiddle but he doesn’t seem to mind.
The couple in front of me starts making out…it never fails; the couple in front of me is always either fighting or kissing! But I guess this is the perfect music for either to occur. I watch Mosshart pace in circles like she’s honing in on her prey.
The music kinda all blended together for me tonight; my mind was somewhere else. As the words “Heart Is A Beating Drum”…”Kissy Kissy”…”U R A Fever”…and “DNA” went in one ear and out the other, I told myself I should really stop reading my horoscope.
“Looking in the mirror
Looking back
A look of wild living
Bound to crack
The heart is a beating drum
The heart is a beating drum
It takes more than you wanted before
To keep it on
Howling at the future
Won’t you be fast and full
All the noise and hot crossed fangs
You, you got in you
Send your love in a rampage
Give her everything you’ve got
And when you come to hate her
Show her more than just a spark
Cause the heart is a beating drum
The heart is a beating drum
It takes more than you wanted before
To keep it on, it’s a beating
The heart is a beating drum
The heart is a beating drum
It takes more than you wanted before
To keep it on, it’s a beating drum
And you feel like you been here
So many times before
It’s not the door you’re using
But the way you’re walking through it”
