To the immediate ‘meh’ of publish happy bloggers who don’t spellcheck…I declare that you should give this some second thought. There are some gems here…especially if you haven’t seen many shows lately.
Friday: Jack Johnson should only be experienced in a festival setting. And his upcoming ‘darker’ album might be interesting. Perfect for the first night when you’re all blissed and mad festival syndrome hasn’t yet set in. The rest of the line up is full of overhyped up and coming acts (Vampire Weekend, Dan Deacon, datarock), some good acts that will be weird at a festival (Battles, Aesop Rock), and some not exciting mid range acts (Tegan and Sara, Midnight Juggernauts). And then there’s Jack White’s Raconteurs, who will probably be worth watching…mainly because of the absence of Meg White and her concert canceling anxiety issues.
Saturday: Portishead would probably be the act that made me buy the ticket…but I’ll hold out for an SF show. Is it weird that one of the best acts I see on this list is Dwight Yoakum? I guess it’s my inner Texan…but, seriously, he is one of the best performers you’ll see. There are several festival saturation bands on here…didn’t you guys just do the circuit last year (M.I.A., Death Cab, Sebastian & Kavinsky)? MGMT will probably be good in this environment- perhaps you won’t catch a whiff of them on stage like I did. Cold War Kids, Turbonegro, and New Young Pony Club will also be worth checking out. VHS or Beta will hopefully fare better here than when I saw them.
Sunday: The collective masses at Coachella will do a synchronized acid drop for this one….Dark Side of the Moon. Ooohhh. Have fun getting home on Monday after that. The rest of the list are fun acts that, luckily, I have already seen recently in my much preferred club setting, but will be worth checking out (Justice, My Morning Jacket (if you’re into that, which I’m kinda not), The Streets, Autolux, The Cool Kids, Holy Fuck, Kid Sister/A-Trak, Sia). Gogol Bordello and Black Mountain are two I missed that I would catch here.
Wawaweewa. If you’ve seen half the bands on the roster…does this mean you’re ahead of the curve?
Tickets go on sale on Friday @ 10am
It’s funny, I’m probably not going this year but the chance to hear My Morning Jacket on a lazy sweltering grassy knoll is almost too much to bear. They were a highlight of the 06 show. So fantastic. Maybe it was just a the right timing for me.
But alas, I’m sticking to my guns that festivals are loosing their appeal for me. I’ll take an intimate venue with any performing artist and HRC any day!
