Anvil: The Story of Anvil

I’d heard nothing but amazing things about this film. And documentaries are my second favorite genre after horror films- especially ones that involve music. I missed the original screening at Slim’s last month, but luckily I had a second chance out amidst the fog at The Bridge theater, complete with a post show band performance.

The show started with a little crowd participation singing, and then oddly went into the obligatory Landmark theater Stella Artois commercial and way too many previews. But once the movie started, there was clapping and hooting and hollering thoughout.

The movie is everything that I expected it to be and more. It’s metal, it’s sweet, it’s humbling, but most of all, it’s very inspirational. There are Spinal Tap moments, and parts that make you wanna cry.

And then there’s the part where you stand up and jump up and down and throw horns. That would be when, during the credits, the sheets are pulled from the equipment on the stage, and the guys you just watched on screen for an hour and a half run out on stage. And Lips runs own the aisle and plays right next to you. I don’t care how much you like this film when you actually get to see it- it won’t come with this part (unless, of course, you happen to live in a few more lucky places)!

They played three songs, and then apparently Lips broke a string before they finished their set with, presumably, ‘Metal on Metal’. It’s too bad, but was awesome nonetheless. After everyone screamed for an encore, someone came out and said, “Anvil loves you”. And we love them back.

I really hope they are making some good money from this film. Because they absolutely deserve it.
